Rasta Quilt!

ffeeeee-ooowwww! Finally, the hubbaloo is over. this time of year always gets crazy with the kids birthdays. Isaiah's is next! the big 16.
But currently we are relaxing in the dining room listening to Louis Armstrong and other. Jazz touches my heart. Reminds me of the birth of my children. Both born to jazz.
I love Jazz. Love it. Ooooo here is a song full of jazz clarinets. That instrument and the notes it flutters through in Jazz; makes my heart fill with water color effects: you know the when you touch a brush with color to a wet paper and it spreads to the end and disappears at the corners.
"doo-op. doo-op. doo-op..."<--my husband singing. I love this man.
It makes me wanna burst out in song and swoon my husbands heart to my chest. hold him close. love him and love him and love him. it makes me want to fling open my drapes in the morning and look out over the scape with a cup of earl grey in my cup. It reminds my of my grandfather, he loved jazz and big band music. It reminds me of his architecture in Detroit and the surrounding area. It makes me O SO HAPPY and puts a feeling of safety and security in my palms. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm o so good for my soul!

Reggae does the same thing. Except for me i say, "I'm in church." I pay attention and let it fill my heart spirituality and grounding.
My sistren, Mama C, is having her third child in July! I made her a "I&I Love" quilt to swaddle her babe in.
hahahahaha. I hadn't washed it yet to get the creases out but this is it!
I wish this sista the best of births. She is such and inspirational force of motherdom. So strong and so bold. So loving and so kind. it was such a blessing to look up and her or hear her voice during my birth of Post. And in my birth of Xire knowing that she was there looking and the stars cheering me on from California. I love this lady!

Speaking of Xire. that lil man and i visited his midwife, Jennifer Kuhlmann last week at BetterBirth.

Birth Story

One week before this little blessing was born I was at my Midwife appointment and I asked about the positioning of the baby and how exactly low this little one was. She said she could do a cervical exam, it may hurt…but I was up for it. Surprised, she said that his head was really low and that I was 2cm dilated.

Sunday May 23rd 2010
Cyrus and I decided to go to the mountains and enjoy some fresh air. I was thinking to myself that it would be interesting to go into labor in the mountains. We stopped in Nederland, CO at the lake and took a short walk. On the way back my kidney and my back started to give me some pain. Coming down the mountain the pain didn’t really stop, it only hid, and then came back. I decided to go to work and the pain made it too hard to get around so I went home shortly after speaking to the midwife. She informed me that I could be having Braxton Hicks in my back and that it could be in combination with dehydration. A co-worker mentioned that she felt the baby was going to come on Friday. I didn’t want to say anything at the time but for about a month I was getting dreams and feelings that the baby would be born on the 28th: that he would be here early…

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I woke up that morning in love with everything I normally wasn’t in love with. Nothing could have crashed my world.
I went to a meeting at 6a, went on a walk with my best friend Jenna, went to my midwife appointment to get a check up (she check to see how low the baby was: I was 3cm and 80% effaced.
After the appointment I met with my mother to do some shopping. However, I was getting shooting pains in my legs and had to squat, unbeknown to me, she was timing these little sits…she knew the baby would be here soon.
I got home and really wanted to go to the pool and have my maternity pictures taken underwater but the water was too cold for Cyrus to get in and we waded. I saw a little spider trying to climb atop a drowned bee…so I inched closer to move the spider to land. Cyrus pushed me in; and I continued to try to save the spider, only for it to float to the bottom and try to crawl to safety. Later, that evening we went to dinner for curry to celebrate Zeke’s completion of middle school…

At 11:50pm I went into labor, but I didn’t know it at the time. I thought that I was having indigestion due to the curry. In my birthing class I had learned of hypno-birth and had done some of the exercises on the CD only to become very frustrated with the woman’s voice, and ultimately trashing the idea of using it in my labor process. Interestingly enough, I began to use the finger drop technique that was used in the CDs. As I watched my finger drop, I closed my eyes and told myself to dive deeper and deeper. I imagined myself diving and swimming to the depths of a water world that comforted me. When the contraction had passed I would open my eyes, bewildered that a tool I opposed before had been used.
I then realized I was in Labor. I rolled over and said, “Papa, we’re gonna have a baby.” He opened his eyes only to tell me that he was dreaming of that exact thing. I rolled over to nurse another contraction as he gently rubbed and tickled my back. After a couple more times of this ritual, Cyrus said, “Let’s go on a walk.” I rolled out of bed and we slowly made our way to the door between contractions.
The moon was bright and I remember a couple of days prior mentioning that it would be funny if I had the baby during the full moon. That night was the end of the full moon. The moon was dissolving the clouds as every couple steps we would turn and hold each other, and slowly sway, during my contractions. I could hear frogs and turned to Cyrus and said, “You hear the frogs? Let’s go frog hunting.” We continued the walk down our street toward the frogs, toward the water, toward the lake. Walking down the middle of the street we passed a Lilac bush, which I had learned days prior from my Doula, Christine, is an aphrodisiac, We stopped and turn to each other as I noticed the sent of this flower made my contraction disappear. Cyrus took the branch off and I held it as we walked further in the moon light. Suddenly, I noticed that my contractions were getting closer and stronger.
This made sense: in the midwife office I was reading about how the hormone oxytocin works during labor. Oxytocin, being the love hormone, when it is released in the body during labor softens the cervix and allows the baby to drop. In return as the baby drops the baby releases Oxytocin to the mother and this exchange of love continues.
We started to talk about what to bring to the hospital. Once we had gotten back to the house and were packing I couldn’t bend down, get across the room, or get down the stairs without having a contraction. And if Cyrus wasn’t there next to me I resorted to staring myself down in my bathroom mirror to make myself dive further into my water of safety.
Thank goodness the hospital is right down the street and walking distance if need be. It was part of my original birth plan to see if I could walk to the hospital but after the moon lit walk we had taken earlier, I knew it would take hours to get to the hospital and I didn’t think that I could comfortably make it.

Friday, May 28th, 2010
We pulled over multiple times in the neighborhood leading to the hospital and finally pulled up to the sleepy emergency room door at 4:44am. Cyrus got out of the car to get a wheel chair and I opened the door only to, thankfully, release at my feet the rest of my curry dinner. Cyrus comes out and says, “Let me move the car up for you, Mama.” I climbed into the wheel chair to find that this wheel chair was made for someone much larger that I was. We joked on our stop-and-go walk to the elevator about how this must be someone else’s wheel chair and that we must have stolen it. Oops. We get upstairs and they were ready to get us in a room, as the emergency room clerk had already informed them that we were on our way up. They rolled me in.
My Midwife on call, Gina, arrived shortly after to see how everything was going. I was 4cm and 90% effaced. They had me strapped to a monitor to screen Post and my contractions. They kept asking me to rate the contractions between one and ten but being that I had nothing to compare them to I told them I couldn’t. They mentioned that they could see my contractions on the monitor but couldn’t tell when I was having them by watching me and I wouldn’t rate them for them. So, they talked about sending me home and I could return later. At this point Cyrus was lying with me and holding me. Having his heart next to mine helped me breathe through intensifying contractions. I couldn’t eat anything of drink anything without throwing it back up.
Cyrus got me a piece of gum because before I left the house I hated that taste in my mouth from the curry. Right after he slipped that gum in my mouth, I shook my head and spit it out. I couldn’t handle strong smells or tastes. The nurse said, “I am going to have the midwife come in and check you. Buzz me if things are progressing.” She left the room and I buzzed her back to tell her things were progressing. I must have been having a contraction when she was talking to me because I didn’t answer her before she left.
The midwife came in and checked me. I was then at 8cm. I turned to Cyrus and said, “Call Christine and Nathan.” The nurse and midwife left and as Cyrus was on the phone with my brother my water broke. The midwife and nurses were changing shifts so Gina ran water in the tub for me as Angela the next midwife arrived. They examined my water and said that they thought there was Meconium in my water and explained to me what that meant once that baby came.
They helped me to the tub and I climbed in right as Christine, my Doula, arrived. She came in to talk to me and I feathered through my contractions. Closing my eyes and breathing them away. My birthing team kept asking me to tell them when I was having  a contractions because they couldn’t tell… so they kept me talking until I said, “Hold on a sec…”
That’s the only way they knew when the contractions started, and when I opened my eyes they knew I was finished. They’d ask me to compare it to the last one and whether I felt pressure. Later, the nurse asked if I wanted aromatherapy and I replied that was fine. She got some oils and asked me which one I wanted. I told her the last one, but when she put it in the water I couldn’t handle the intense smell and I told them. “Ok, I am ready.”
I got out and it was time to start pushing this little wonder out. They checked me again and told me that there was one more fluid sack and they were just going to make a small cut to release the fluid. To that the fluid looked clear and they decided that the color in my water was just from the Perineal massage I was doing the past two months so that I wouldn’t rip during birth.
I pushed for 2 ½  hours in every position they could think of: I was on my back, squatting, on my knees hugging the bed between contracts and moving into child’s pose during pushing, sitting… I remember being given coconut water, because I refused to be on IV. I remember at some point needing to be on oxygen. And I remember Cyrus’s voice, “Mama, your hair looks amazing.” In which I cracked a huge smile.
The midwife told me she was going to have me stand up and do a lunge. I stood up as Cyrus helped me. Here I have to make note that Cyrus is my strong-hold especially during this important moment and for that, among so many other things, I love him so dearly. As I stood I needed to bear down and held onto his neck trying to pull him to the floor. I stood up again only to hear his voice, “Mama, this is what we are going to do. When you go down I am going to put my knees in between yours and help spread them apart further. You tell me if it is too far. After a couple times…
“Come on! Come On! One more push, Jess.”
“You can do it.”
“Quick Breathe in.”
“Stand up one more time.”
To that I said, “I can’t.”
I pushed one more time and kept thinking, I just want to meet my son. And heard the midwife say, “Oh, that’s what was in the way…”
And there they placed my son in my arms to my surprise: I had thought I only pushed out his head and now this little wonder was out in the world and in my arms!

I had had a dream a couple months prior about my son the moment he was in my arms, what he looked like, the color of his skin, the way his face was going to look, his lips, his ears, his eyes… and I have to say he looked exactly like my dream.
I knew I was going to have this little one early. In fact, I knew that this one was going to arrive the 28th of May. If you would have asked me and pried it out of me, I would have told you. I remember waking up one morning saying to myself, yep, this one is coming early.
They placed him in my arms.
We wanted to wait until all of the blood was done pulsating to Post before we cut his cord and during that time wanted to breastfeed him. My brother walked in shortly after Post and I were moved to the bed and watched as Cyrus cut the cord. Post was then officially in the world.
I learned later that Post had his left hand next to his face. This hand we call The Claw, as it seems to have a mind of its own and be in everything.

Post’s Birth was all natural: no pain killers, no augmentation, no stitches, no complications, and Mama made a sound only once.

Haloumi Artichoke Pasta

I am a cheesemonger! worked 6 years selling cheese and am onto bigger and better things in my cheese world future: making cheese! Here is some info about this awesome grill-able Greek sheep milk hunk!

Haloumi:
Popular in Turkey, Cyrpus, and in Arab countries, Haloumi is a Semifirm sheep milk cheese with an aftertaste of mint given that the cheese is flavored with shreds of mint and then sold in blocks with a little bit of brine. This great cheese can be grilled without loosing its shape and texture; it squeaks between your teeth.

Haloumi Artichoke Pasta

1 pack of Haloumi, cut into chunks
1/2 can of baby Artichoke hearts, chopped
4 sprigs of Tarragon, leaves removed and roughly chopped
2 t basil, roughly chopped
3 sprigs thyme, leaves removed
3 T unsalted Butter
Fresh Ground Salt and Pepper
2 handfuls Linguine noodles (unfortunately I had none on hand and had to use spaghetti noodles)
2 t lemon zest

1. melt butter in pan over medium, add tarragon, basil, thyme, pepper lemon zest and a little bit of salt. bring to a boil and turn off heat
2. prepare noodles according to directions
3. heat a small amount of Olive oil in skillet over high heat. turn down to medium- high and add Haloumi and artichokes. move cheese around with spatula until cheese is golden brown. Turn off heat.
4. Serve Haloumi and artichokes over Pasta with butter sauce atop.

i am working on a number of projects. Just finished my little buddy Kai's birthday tent! I will post that bad boy soon here once I get a pic and how to make it.

BBQ Bacon Egg Sandwich

Because my boys don't care for tomatoes and it is mainly due to the skins of the fruit. I blanch my Tomatoes first. Here is a real quick overview of how to blanch a tomato, it is super simple:

boil a pot of water, place washed tomatoes in boiling water for about 1-2 minutes until the skin begins to split, pull out with a slotted spoon, the skin should just slip right off. voilà! Careful they will be hot hot!

BBQ Bacon Egg Sandwich

1 lb. Bacon or 1 pack of vegan bacon (I purchased Tabasco  bacon from Whole Foods Market for the boys)
Favorite BBQ sauce
3 Roma Tomatoes, blanched and skin removed, and sliced
6 Eggs, lightly beaten
3 T cream
6 slices of Bread
Softened butter

1. (vegi bacon has to be done in pan, instructions will follow)
Bacon: line pan with foil, lay out bacon on foil, brush with BBQ sauce, place another piece of foil loosely on top as to prevent spattering in oven (i hate bacon grease in my oven), place pan in oven and set oven to 400 F (do not pre heat), cook for about 17-25 minutes depending on your oven and how u like your bacon. remove and place on towels to soak grease. cover and keep warm.
Vegi  Bacon: grease pan lightly, place vegi bacon in pan when hot on medium heat, flip every 2 minutes until desired crispiness is obtained. remove from heat and keep warm.
2. meanwhile, heat tomatoes in oven on foil while bacon cooking.
3.combine eggs and cream, whisk. heat small amount of oil in skillet on medium. Add eggs mixture. move eggs around with flipper until almost done and turn off heat and remove from heat. cover
4. Butter  bread on one side. heat a skillet on high. toss bread in butter side down for 30 sec to a minute (until brown), repeat for all slices.
5. top bread with eggs, tomatoes, bacon and then bread. (if using vegi bacon throw a bit if BBQ sauce in there on bacon)
This is my vegi bacon version, I don't eat Pork. but my boys do and they loved thier version. I make a vegi version and meat version of meals almost every night. Makes for a lot of cooking.

Anniversary and Overland Expo Adventure

Surprise!

"Pack your bags cuz when i get home we are leaving for a couple days!"

Such words are not typical to come out of my husbands mouth yet still a great surprise! Saturday we hopped in the Syncro at 2a and headed to an unknown location, actually only my husband knew where we were heading to.

Overland Expo 2012
Amazing we got to see all types of outdoor vehicle make ups. My favorite was a company based out of South Africa. Mama so wants this tent for atop my syncro! oooo yummy it's gonna be so much fun to go camping with the kids and the dog! heck yes!
The next day we headed out to the Grand Canyon because if you wouldn't believe my husband has never seen this beauty and he lived in Arizona before we met. Breath taking. And I am convinced it is the most beautiful place on earth...perhaps there are only a few places more beautiful. I really feel at peace there and think it maybe an addition to my "Holiday in My Head"--a holiday in your head is a place that you go on vacation when you need one during the day.
On our way back to civilization my husband and I exchanged our anniversary gifts. I got him a pocket watch with an engraving on the back that will remind him of the poem I wrote him when I first realized I Love him. The poem was about how the clocks in his house made me feel we were in a place where time stood still.

The engraving says:
"being with you, where times stands still, and love is eternal."
He got me a ring of patina silver, making it look like tree bark with 2 diamonds in it. =)

So the project for the next 2 weeks? Getting the syncro fitted for August Camping in Washington for my birthday. Check out this pick of my boys working on the beaut'! Even the lil one!

Heavenly Flapjax for my loving husband

There are somethings I do regularly for my husband when he returns home. Making flapjacks every morning, or at least most mornings, is one of them. This recipe is essentially the Betty Crocker version on page 58 with a lil love and technique. My boys like fluffy flapjacks and they like they to be pumped out at a good pace. I don't have a griddle but i do have a frying pan.

Mama's Fluffy FlapJax
1 egg
1 c flour
3/4 c milk
1 T brown sugar
2 T Coconut oil
3 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1/4 c water
cooking spray

1. beat egg until fluffy with a whisk
2. mix in remaining 6 ingredients until smooth
3. add water and whisk in
4. spray pan and heat on medium-high until water sizzles when droplets hit pan. turn down to medium. I heat my skillet after I mix my batter because then the batter has time to fluff up.
5. spoon 2 T of batter onto pan, wait until edges are cooked and the rest is still soupy. Slip spatula underneath the flapjack, tilt pan to the side (this helps to flip), flip the flapjack over and watch it rise.
6. Call out, "Hot FlapJack!'" and serve it up.

other recipes my husband has me make during his stay at home is crab cake Egg Benedict (I think if I had a restaurant I would name it Ben Addict and serve hundreds of versions of Eggs Benedict....because i love it that much), Butter chicken/fish  curry, Cheesy rice, White Sauce Lasagna (recipe below), and a few others. Tonight for dinner we had:

Sweet Potato from Brussels

3 large sweet potatoes, washed and sliced a 1/2 in thick and boiled
3 c of Brussels sprouts, washed, preened, and quartered
olive oil
fresh cracked salt and pepper
1 T brown sugar
2 T coconut oil
1 1/2 c uncooked Israeli couscous
1 1/2 c water
1 t vegi bouillon
Shredded cheddar
3 Avocados sliced

1. place sweet potatoes in a large bowl. and drizzle about 1 T olive oil on top and sprinkle brown sugar
2. in another bowl put brussel sprouts. drizzle about 2 T of olive oil and crack your salt and pepper to your liking. mix
3. in medium sauce pan heat coconut oil over medium heat. add 1 1/2 c Israeli couscous. coat in coconut oil and cook for about 1 min. add water and bouillon and stir. bring to boil. cover and lower heat to a simmer for 5 min. remove from heat and keep covered ( water should be gone)
4. meanwhile set oven to broil. On half a cooking sheet spread out Brussels sprouts and on the other half spread out sweet potatoes. place in over for 5 min, check move around, and broil another 5.
5. serve over couscous and top with cheese and sliced avocados

mine has a hunk of Halibut on top with salt and dill because i needed some fish tonight.

White Sauce Lasagna

1 jar of Newman's Own Alfredo
1/2 c milk
5 sprigs of Tarragon
2 sprigs of Rosemary (do not use already ground rosemary)
1 tsp nutmeg
1 Pack of Oven ready Lasagna noodles or already cooked lasagna noodles
1 pack of shredded mozzarella (we love cheese so we use a huge pack, it is up to you)
1 container of Ricotta
1/2 pack of frozen spinach defrosted or 1/2 lb of cooked spinach (moisture drained!)
2 c of chopped mushrooms
1 egg

1. preheat oven to 375 F
2. in a large mixing bowl mix jar of Alfredo and milk. remove leaves from tarragon sprigs and roughly chop, add. Remove rosemary from sprigs and crush with fingers, add. add nutmeg and mix thoroughly.
3. in food processor (because I hide my vegis or make them really difficult to pull out) process spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, and egg.
4. spoon about 4 T of sauce in bottom of rectangular glassware and spread to an even layer. Line out noodles.
5.spread a layer of ricotta mixture and top with mozzarella. spoon on sauce. Add layer of noodles
6. continue with ricotta, cheese, sauce, and noodles until ricotta mixture is done.
7. put on remaining sauce, cover with foil, and put in oven for 45 min. you want to see bubbles coming from the bottom of the pan to the top to know it is done.
8. pull out, remove foil, and top with cheese. let cool 5 min.

Christine this is for you! this dish is awesome served the next day or even reheated from being frozen. also coming soon is this recipe vegan version! =)

Jabba, Rasta Candle, and a Surprise

I spent my day with Jabba the Hut, aka my youngest of almost 2 months.

This lil baby has been the best. I put him down in the evening, and i am referring to dressing him in his pjs and putting him in his crib, and he falls asleep on his own. Not only does he have this magic trick but he only wakes up once, maybe twice a night. He has just been like this since he was born. Good Baby!

Well I feel most of my day is consumed with the toddler and mostly keeping him away from baby in the late afternoon because baby seriously can't handle a toddler's whine. Today, I actually had a chance to play with this lil dude while folding laundry to Stevie Wonder. And he pulls out this awesome magic trick and giggles at me while I am tickling him....for the first time. This baby is very Zen so this moment is hallmark. i tried  tape it but it was difficult because he was on to me.

Anyways, earlier today it rained, thank god! and the middle child and I decided to make a crayon candle.
Here is how you do it.

Supplies:
Crayons (not washable)
can (label peeled off
Sauce pan
mold for candle (we used a glass one so these instructions are for that)
water

1. pick out crayons and peel label off. the best way to do this is to take a knife and slice down the length of the crayon.
2. break crayons up and place in tin can
3. fill pan with water and place can in water (you are creating a double boiler)
4. boil water until crayons melted in can
5. place wick in mold
6. Carefully pour wax into mold and let cool ( you can cool wax down faster if the mold is in an ice bath)
7. Choose more colors and you can create layers.

Ours is a Rasta Candle because that is how we roll!

Cool thing is when teh wax melts you can pour it out and make lil rock crayons. you just wait til the wax cools put is still palpable to mold and mold it into a shape...like a rock. now let your lil one color with it again...cuz mama is done with her zen moment with candles and  now it is play time again.
"Thank you sweetie for letting mama borrow your crayons."

My husband is the king of surprises, mostly because he know I love them and it is hard hard hard to surprise me. So my husband came today (surprise) and we are going on an adventure in our syncro with the kids. Where to? don't know. Bring it on. More on that tomorrow.

Mama is very happy!

Mama Lellow Mama

My son is still sick. Thank goodness he likes to drink infusions and tea so i can give him hot ginger and honey to sip on. But this morning I knew I was gonna need some health boosters so i fixed up some "purple balls" and butternut squash for him with some local honey. Needless to say, he wondered what i was giving him because it wasn't cereal with coconut milk.
So i decided to switch on his fav, Babies the documentary, and proceed to spoon half of the mixture and half cheerios (in coconut milk) for him while he was distracted thinking he wouldn't notice my down the hatch attempt. Well, to my surprise he preferred the concoction.
Bingo! Mama gets a gold star.

Late today at nap time it was one excuse after the other. =) typical, hehehehehe.
1."Mama, baby ba ba. Mama baby boo'. mama baby ni' ni'." translation: mama the baby needs a baba change. or maybe some boob or maybe it is time for baby to go to sleep [like me].
2. "mama ba ba poo poo." translation: mama i need a diaper change cuz I went poo poo and if you dont come in i will attempt to give myself one.
3. "Mama lellow mama" translation: mama i am coloring mama...
SHOOT! Coloring, where did he find a coloring utensil?
I open the door to this:
My son has emptied the baking soda out of the diaper pale and artfully made a mural for me on his floor. It is a big mural, and it was very hard not to crack a smile.
"baby i love you. you are gonna be just like mama, my lil artist...Now let's lay down and take a nap. Cover yourself up. Nite nite."

Dinner tonight: Sweetcorn and Rice

Drowning in Motherdom

I think as a parent you try to instill in your children positive thinking and the brickwork to lay a constructive path in life. And at times we feel like we don't even follow our own rules and regulations. I'm feeling like I am sick of handing out punishments to try to get my children to steer clear of ____________, or to respect house rules, etc. I also feel like there is only so much one parent can do. And although the child may feel like they are the one banging their head against the wall, they have no idea that their parents are doing the same thing on the other side of that plaster. It isn't like we were all right and ready to be parents, it is something we are learning too while showing a facade that we know what we are doing.
You know that blank stare, the one that says i am looking at you but I am not listening because you are reprimanding me for something....and I am going to do it anyway the moment you turn your back. And yes we want our children to make their own mistakes and we want them to learn the hard lessons on their own. We want them to explore the world and the future....
but in a non-self destructive way.
How come it has to aggravate us so much when the rule we have lain doesn't stick? How do we poker face it up so it seems like we have the authority and they don't, that we are still the rock and foundation of the household?
I have no idea the answers to all of these questions. But increasingly over the years I feel like I am drowning in motherdom with our eldest. I feel like i just need to provide a small amount of structure, if any, so that there is something for him to rely on. I feel like I should leave him be, in that he is a teenager and he probably feels he has better things to do than talk to me. I feel like I am always dishing out a sentence to make a point. I feel like i am always on edge as to whether I can fully trust or just give an inch and not turn my back to find the mile is gone.
I am frustrated that i wasn't there at the beginning until now of his life and haven't gotten the chance to see him develop into the person he is today. i have no idea why he does the things he does or says the things he says or feels the way he does about stuff and I really wish i had the correct insight to how all those early years went down. I am frustrated that I am the one who is raising him the majority of the time and that in that I have drawn a blank most days as to how to connect to our teenager. I should ask for help from the other two parents but I don't know how and don't want to cross lines. So i guess I feel like i am standing in the middle of a line for a soup-can telephone, on one end is the mother and the other side is the father and the line is the teenager being stretch so thin across 3 parents....but i don't get to talk.
I wonder if anyone else feels this way.

And yeah this is Karma for all the crap i put my parents through.

Here's some Far Sides: I have vivid memories of reading far side comics at my friend Rachel's house because the books were always in the bathroom. Her parent's always did have great humor....
anyway, Far Sides:

Purple Balls

So my son has been hooked on dum dums. This is all my fault being that I use them to bribe him into doing what i need him to do at the moment; be it getting through the grocery store, getting in the stroller instead of pushing it, etc.
So now when he wants a snack he says 'sucker' in his dialect. which isn't as annoying as his high pitched snack call.
So today he is asking for a sucker, which i am not going to give him because he didn't eat breakfast, then I remember the freeze dried blueberries my husband has in his baking shelf that i once placed in an easter egg for the lil guy.
Bingo!
so he is happily munching on these freeze-dried blueberries asking what color they are....which in toddler language sounds similar to "lellow." not to be confused with yellow. =)
so
I tell him they are purple, but they are called blueberries. He follows with a look of disbelief, like I am trying to pull the wool over his eyes (ie, mama these are not blue....and they are balls not berries [whatever those are])
So I said, "you are right. they are purple balls"
Now my son is walking around with blueberry.....ahem, pardon me, purple ball....stained finger tips and mouth. Well, i'll be a mom about it.
"How cute!"

Check out this pic we have from when he was 7 months or something like that: Blueberry Demolition

For dinner I enjoyed Rising Moon Organics Feta-Hazelnut with Butternut Squash Ravioli with butter sauce.

2T Capers

Butternut & Stinging Nettle

So oddly last night as I headed off to bed I felt an odd dryness in my throat...woke up to nurse the lil guy and it was painfully there. Perhaps my allergies are kicking up again or could it be my toddler's fingers constantly in my face. =)
That brings to mind my midwife appointment last week where she cracked, "Well we do live in Utah," in lue of my son's wheezing which he creates when he is excited due to small airways in his nostrils. I irritatingly chuckled along with the crack. The truth is this is a huge reason why we are moving from Utah and specifically the Salt Lake Area. My neighbor went to a live green fest when i was at the doctors a couple weeks back and ran into some gals i have been meaning to get to know on a first name basis the Utah Moms for Clean Air. Also, I want to meet the physicians they associate with [Utah Physicians for Healthy Environment]. Here's a quick story about all that:

Back in August when we were moving here my son came down with a 'cold.' I am all for my child getting his bearings int eh world on his own and getting ill when it is in need as to build antibodies, but. Not when he is sick continually for 3 to 4 months straight. I kept going into the pediatrician and kept hearing that there was nothing to be done. Never once was it mentioned to me that we were living in highly polluted area that get incredibly toxic during the winter months when inversions play their part. I too came down with a serious sinus infection and learn for the first time that I was allergic to something outside and inside my house, and something definitely in Utah, This doctor said so was my son. Being pregnant she suggested that after my baby was born to get an allergy test. So my son and I went back to Colorado to visit family in the mountains and magically my son was better. Coincidence, I think not. We then traveled to California and road tripped to Seattle, Wa. When we returned I was on top of making sure we didn't get sick because the last thing i wanted was to be in labor and be ill. We made it. However, now.....

ok so regardless. Today has been the day dedicated to Stinging Nettle Tea and Foods to help with environmental toxins...kinda, because mama likes cheese and I am gonna have cheese on my meal.

Info on Stinging Nettle and Allergies:
...according to pg 133 ofPrescription for Herbal Healing by Phyllis A. Bach, CNC
In low doses, stinging nettle root extract increases the production of T cells, immune cells that act as a controlling mechanism on other immune cells that cause allergic reactions. Stinging nettle root extracts increase the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2), which increases the production of new T cells and sensitizes existing T cells to respond to IL-2. A Clinical study with sixty-nine participants at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, found that stinging nettle was more effective than placebo in treating allergic rhinitis. Nettle leaf has become a popular treatment for allergies. This is probably due to its anti-inflammatory properties. If taken before a meal, nettle leaf is very effective for people with certain food sensitivities.
My tea consists of super strength stinging nettle and peppermint while sweetened with local honey.....Cuz that is one thing Utah is gonna help you out with if you are allergic to the place. Beehive it up!

Here is a list of foods to help lil ones with environmental toxins, it is on my list of first foods that I compiled from multiple sources:

So surprisingly this evenings meal was a Butternut Squash Feta Burger. Butternut squash is high in Vitamin A. This powerful anti-oxidant helps maintain function of mucus membranes. The natural poly-phenolic flavonoid break down Vitamin A so it is useful in protecting the body. Check out the USDA on this bad boy.
Anywho. I used the recipe Veggie Mama has for Pumpkin Feta Burgers and replace pumpkin with Butternut Squash. Butternut Squash and pumpkin are in the same family.
I was bad and added butter to my bun and sharp cheddar meltaliciously laid on my hot burger, neither of which is gonna help my mucus...but mama had a hard day and also my toddler is deciding to strike against food lately. The feta was goat feta so I was in the clear for that one.
How do you build your burger?

I buddied mine up in this order: whole wheat bun, butter (Cuz everything is better with butter, baby), spinach, melted sharp cheddar, burger, Cajun roumalade sauce, and whole wheat bun.
Teen-oddlers paired theirs up with BBQ sauce, which I think masks everything but hey when it comes to kids and their veggies...Down the hatch. oh, and the toddler ate it with a smile, "Nummy, mama!"
