Mama's Hands

Titling this post: Mama's Hands reminds me of this great song. Anywho,

Mama's been busy.
Resulting in the neglect of posts. So let me show you what I've been up to:

Refinished and upholstered an antique Settee for our worldly reading room.

Made Valentines day van's for my boys. Post insisted on having green wheels and orange (go figure) body, then went on to attach a headlight to it so it could drive in the dark. Xire just makes vrooom noises around the house.

Slowly I have been getting back into the kitchen. Haven't been spending anytime in there, it is kind of like I have no love for it. Now one to cook for. Don't cook for my husband anymore, our oldest wants to eat his own stuff, our 2 year old is going through a picky stage though he ends up eating my dinner when it is on the table instead of his own, and our youngest well he isn't picky but he's got a menu of his own being so little.
So i am sitting in a house of sickies, usually when my husband leaves the lil ones come down with a respiratory illness and honestly it is due to the stress of his departure. This time however it is my fault I was doing some woodworking in the garage while my husband was working on the syncro and neither were wearing any mask of sorts while going in and out of the garage. So they both have a respiratory attack at the moment.
Here's my regiment:

Peppermint Tea: expectorant, soother, yummy with honey (for Post, agave for Xire)
Chamomile Tea: expectorant, antimicrobial, along with a slue of other benefits, calms you down, and a staple for Post.
Hyssop Tea: to break up that mucus and produce a productive cough to get that stuff out of there
Turmeric: Look it up in accordance to Aryavedic medicine
Licorice Sticks: 4/5 members in this house hold chew on them for dental, oral fixation, teething, when we are sick.
Ginger: Immune system
Garlic: Immune system, see follow recipe for how I hide it in my 2 year olds food
Fresh Fruit
Water
Squashes
Pumpkin

I'm gonna kick this Sh**!
Wellness Smoothie

1 banana
1t Ginger
1/4t Turmeric
1/4 of a garlic clove, tip part
pinch of cinnamon
Almond Milk

-Blend it together
*Note: if you let it sit too long the garlic will infiltrate so have your lil one ready to drink it down when it is done blending. A good way to do this is to get them to put all the ingredients in and push the blender button. They'll be excited

Here is a recipe that is tasty and I have been eating over and over. My husband, when he was home last, took a sneaker bite and loved it, Go me! because he honestly doesn't enjoy all of my creations.

Spinach Feta Stuffed French Toasties

1/4c frozen spinach, defrosted and drained meticulously well
1/4c crumbled feta
pinch of nutmeg, generous
1t dill
cracked pepper
pinch of oregano, generous
Chalal loaf sliced diagonally
2 eggs, whisked
2T Butter, or more
1 Large clove of Garlic, minced
1 Roma Tomato, Chopped

1. Mix first 6 ingredients.
2. Turn pan on to med-hi and get some oil hot in it.
3. Dip one side of a bread slice in egg, place egg side down, scoop as much filling as you want on the bread in the pan (~2 heaping spoonfuls)
4. Place a egged bread, egg side up on top and flip. Remove from pan when both sides are golden.
5. meanwhile, in another pan melt  2T butter and add minced garlic. Cook up until Garlic is golden and remove from heat.
6. Cut toastie in half and pour garlic butter over. Top with Roma tomatoes

Oh my husband F***ing loves me, he got us a BMC 29er for valentine's day (to share for the moment). =)
Quick Pic, ignore the trash cans in the background.

Lady Marley

It has been hard for all of us and Marley. I think especially for Marley and me. Last year around this time I was pregnant with our youngest and my childhood dog passed away. I miss him dearly and missed him greatly one day. I kept imagining him following me around the house and I realized I needed a companion to love and snuggle (some life force beyond my children that I could connect with and tell all my secrets, a friend). I told my husband I needed a companion and we started looking into dogs. I took as many tests as possible to find the breed that would fit and and everyone came up with Black Russian Terrier. So i started my research, the more I read the more this breed made sense to me. Fit like a glove.
When my husband walked into the house with her in his arms I was so overwhelmed with joy. She kissed me I knew this was the beginning of a forever friendship. She'd follow me everywhere, sit in my lap, try to cheer me up after a tough day with the kiddos, Snuggled with me. Our hearts melded into one. One love, One Heart! Just like Bob Marley's song, and I knew it was true. She truly has swept me off my feet. I needed someone to love and care for, and that is exactly what I received. I find no pain in realizing this.
The last night we snuggled together on the couch as long as she could stand it and I stayed in the room until the light of day came. It was a misty/foggy morning and she wasn't doing too well. When we left for the vet she came up to the front of the car as if to say, Its okay mama I'm gonna be right here. and sat right next to me while I scratched her ears. I had washed her quilt it was all clean and warm. She laid in my arms the whole time. When she was finally at rest i realized she was finally at peace, no pain, and she seemed completely content and happy. We laid there a long time and then I covered her up for her journey.
I needed to go somewhere after that, I didn't want to go home to an empty house so I headed to the book store. I was looking for a book to give the kids from Marley. I had told our 2 year old through drawing a picture that Marley was going to visit her grandma and her grandma was going to make her feel better. Here is our house, here is her grandma's cloud, help me color the rainbow...I had gotten him a rainbow crystal for christmas so he could make rainbows with light and I told him to keep it close so Marley would know where to go, it is a map of sorts. He can use it to find the way she got to her grandmother's house whenever he wished. So I was looking for a book on rainbows, no book i liked. I was looking for a book about an animal going to grandma's house, no book I liked. Then I look up and a book is sitting right in front of me, bright and clear....titled, I kid you not: "One Love: based on Bob Marley's song" The book talks about one love, one heart, gathering as a family and everything will be alright. SOLD to the dreadlocked mama.
I came home and didn't want to get out of the car and our oldest came out and gave me an incredible huge hug and told me it was going to be okay then handed me our youngest to hug. I brought marley's quilt in smelling it all the way and sat on it to wrap Marley's gift to the boys. I wrote: To my loving family, love Lady Marley, See you Soon! I gave it to the little ones after a bath and we all sat down and read it. There is a dog in the book and every page my son pointed out Marley. At the end i turned to book over and there was a picture of Bob Marley. I explained to him that just like Lady Marley Bob believed that love heals all things. I then asked him if he wanted to hang a picture of Bob Marley in the hall way so he can remember. He agreed. So now there is a picture of Bob in the hallway to remind our family at Lady Marley and Bob believe in BIG love! As I settled down my evening and was sitting nursing my youngest. He kept lifting off my breast to look over his shoulder. Its funny because I realized this as I was imagining Lady Marley walking around the chair like she would trying to lick him and laying at my feet. I feel she was truly there. All last night she was in my dreams and we were having good times.
This morning the boys and I listened to Bob Marley and made Apfelpfannkuchen (German Apple Pancakes) to remember Marley. It was a beautiful morning.
I miss her and I know she misses us too, but I do believe she will be here again. This afternoon, as the kiddos are napping I am a bit lonely without her physically here but I know she is in my heart and soul. She truly was holding on so strong and bravely for me, I kept telling her it is ok if you need to go, mama is right here, but she wouldn't, so strong. What a lesson in life. Our brave little hero!

I'm Back from Outer Space

A strange life has come over me in the recent months. I haven't been cooking, I have been creating many projects for others, I have been receiving Guest, We have a new addition to our family (Lady Marley), We've been sick and we've gotten better, Our oldest is rocking school and happy with life, But somewhere I have lost myself.

Sometimes I feel life has past me by, this doesn't make me upset, it doesn't make me concerned, i feel like I just watch the train and wait for it to slow so i can catch the ride.

I promise my love of cooking will return. My joy and full creativity.....But currently our Puppy is not doing so well. Much of my time has been spent trying to figure out what we have going on with her.

Does she have mega-Esophagus
How many birth defects does she have
What is her life expectancy
Can a proper life ever be provided for her

My husband got me a dog for christmas, with him away I have needed a companion to snuggle up to and love-on beyond my children. And that is what i have gotten, however she is having so much trouble, I am not sure what to do.

I love her.

Please, keep her in your thoughts and blessings.

Love, heidi

Adventures in Potty Training, Starring The Poo Flinging Monkey

Preface
Potty training. Ya know, I thought that getting my toddler to fall asleep the whole night was hellacious. Well, to be honest, I still think it was and I try desperately to not make the mistakes I thought I did with him with our youngest. So far it has paid off...but the opossite issue I had with Post has arisen lately. Post had no problem napping and every problem sleeping through the night. Xire has developed a problem taking naps and sleeps great through the night. This is because, this lil bug is still sick. I digress.
Potty Training.
An Idea occurred to me: Why give stickers or snacks for going potty? Why not a reminder reward?
A temporary old school tattoo.
So every time our son goes potty like a big boy, he gets a tattoo. A Potty Tattoo. He knows why he gets them and I think it can serve as a reminder to go to the potty. Plus, my son looks like a bad ass Potty Prince. Like mama and papa, covered in tattoos.
Scene
Loud Jungle noises arise from behind the door.
What is going on in there? Sounds like the same non-sense as usual: monkey business.
Hours upon hours this rambunctious behavior ensues in the trembling ears of listeners, ease-dropper, ear-gawkers, in the middle of the afternoon. Babies are held and shushed to sleep as bursts of loudness empty out of the room.
It sounds to outsiders like the primate is trying to communicate with his mother. Where is she? Probably, trying to sleep somewhere in another room...Or not at all, with all this commotion.
The mama Ape enters the scene, grumbling and tired from an afternoon of planned rest lost to the mid-day hootenanny of her child, she opens the door. An over powering smell of fecal matter fills the air. Furniture has been re-arranged, clothing and blankets strewn around the room (covered in the same brown matter as the smell), toys displaced in corner and crannies (hiding from the stench).
SQUISH!
The mama ape lifts up her foot while a look of sheer disgust wipes across her face. The little monkey leaps at the mother with glee, she has returned.
'see mama I have cleaned it up, aren't I a good little monkey?.....'
Hilarious I am sure. I quickly swept Post up, deposited him into the tub, grabbed 3 wipe-ies. Three, did i seriously think that was enough to fulfill the cleaning of this mess: walls, door, drawers, drapes, bed, floor...Covered! While Xire was screaming his head off and Post wanting desperately to escape the tub, mama successfully cleaned the room, leaving a quarter bottle of vinegar and a pile of Clorox wipes behind. One wash later, the house was seemingly at a balance, as balanced as it could be with a sleepless toddler and mama roaming around the digs.
I explained to my brother as I was cleaning up: I really shouldn't be upset, I should just be excited with anticipation that one day I won't have to change his diapers anymore. He doesn't like the feeling of his diaper being dirty, so he takes it off. Some drops on the floor, and my son happens to be a very tidy kid, so he collects what he can to clean it up. Really, in retrospect, he is being very very good.
So that was yesterday.
The day before yesterday, my brother had headed out of town to head home after a short visit. About an hour later I am heading out the house with 2 lil ones to rescue him. His engine died and went to heaven. My poor brother has been stranded here in Utah almost the whole week and practically his whole vacation time.
So
Colorado! Holy Smokes, no pun intended. My lovely home sate is up in flames. My parents have been on pre-evacuation for a number of days. The Waldo canyon fire has claimed 16.5k acres as of this morning. For up dates check geoMAC and InciWeb. On top of this my brother was 2 mi from the High Park Fire in Fort Collins, Co where he lives. So back to my folks, they decided to come out here to escape the fire and help my brother with his car situation. O, adding to this, a day or two before the were under pre-evacuation, a water main broke and flooded the basement of their house. Hows all that for bad luck.
Alright, enough of that.

Tie Dye Rasta Lion

pack-n-play sheet for Xire's crib
My best Lady, Jenna, and I bought dye to tie dye Post's onesies when he was one month old.
Never happened.
So I got on a kick today. I love dying garments so I stretched on my rubber gloves and got to work. Kids think this is a crazy fun activity so make sure the clothes they are wearing are alright to get stained. Adults can get a little more serious about their creations, hence the lion.
Here is how you can create this bad boy. I like Rit dyes but you can use which ever brand you like. You can get Rit at the grocery store on the same isle as bleach.

You are going to need:
red dye (make sure you get a red-red it can turn a bit purple if you get an untrue red color)
yellow dye (golden yellow is a great choice here)
green dye (my green was an earth green, it has a bit of blue in it)
3 squeeze bottles (you can get them at the craft store, ours are from the candy section )
Hot water
Rubber gloves
Rubber Bands
cotton garment or material in which you would like to dye
plastic bin or metal sink
baby gate, cookie cooling rack, metal grate (anything with a bunch of wholes in it)
Cold Water
mild laundry detergent
Plastic store bags (recycle recycle recycle)
microwave
simple picture of a lion to work off of
and Reggae Music ;D

**here are some videos and links to get your bearing:
How to tie dye a smiley face
How to tie dye a heart
Rit Tie Dying
Note: you don't need top soak your shirt in soda ash

1. fold your picture of a lion in half. you are making a symmetrical face so you only need to know what one side looks like. you don't need awesome drawing skins to create this.

2. fold you garment in half as seen in videos above. Draw out half of your lion face with your kiddos washable marker. Don't add too much detail because it will get lost. Think outline, eyes, nose and chin/mouth.
3. As seen in the smiley face video, gather for the eye. the only thing you should not pay attention to in this video is how to make the mouth.
4. Next, as seen in the heart video, for the nose (just the triangle part of the nose)
5. Next, as seen in the heart video, gather the outline of the head. As he says, make sure this is a straight line when you are done so the the rubber band does it's job.
6. Next find your chin/mouth line and gather it into a straight line, using information you learned in the heart video.
7. now that the face is done, take mental note of what this looks like so when you are dying you know what part you are working with.
8. in an accordion manner, gather the material around the face, and rubber band where you think the mane should stop. Accordion the rest of the material and rubber band as you please
9. dunk garment in water and ring out.
10. I only had a child's gate. hahaha what a mom. So, place the child's gate over your plastic bin. you are essential creating the work place as seen in the videos.
11. place 4 T of liquid dye or 1/2 pack of powder dye in a squeeze bottle. Pour 2 c of blazing hot water from your faucet into bottle. repeat for each color.
12. Put on gloves, remember the face part, dye it red. The mane, yellow. The outer area, green.
13. place dyed garment in a plastic shopping bag. Twist the bag to close. Place this bag in another bag and twist to close.
14. As read in the Rit Tie Dye Section, place garment in the microwave for to minutes. I checked mine every 1 minute because I wanted to make sure it didn't explode.
15. Let it sit for an hour or two: make dinner, bathe the kiddos, put them to bed. Okay, now go out side to the hose and open your bag and remove garment. Recycle your bags
16. rinse the dye out until clear with cold water. remove rubber bands, and rinse again. Make sure water rung out of garment is clear.
17. wash garment in mild detergent and dry in drier on high.
18. Ta-DA!!!!!

Love love love and Blessings!
